PIPFRUIT

Waimea Nurseries has been supplying trees to pipfruit growers since it was established in 1971. We are committed to the long term future of New Zealand’s pipfruit industry.

Our team of skilled staff ensure trees are nurtured and produced using the most up-to-date international best practice. The nursery is accredited under the Pipfruit NZ European Canker Management Programme, and our rootstocks are certified as free of specified viruses (FSV) under the NZ Fruit Tree Growers Group Rootstock Certification Scheme.

We are at the forefront of high-density planting systems in New Zealand with the introduction of key dwarfing rootstocks. In addition, we are contributing new varieties through our subsidiary Waimea Variety Management, which introduces up to 20 new selections of pipfruit annually from the world’s leading breeding programmes. Once in our development system, varieties are tested for viruses and planted to ensure stability, trueness to type and market suitability.

Through INN (International New-Varieties Network), Waimea Nurseries has established relationships with breeders and agencies across the globe, enabling us to offer the best possible varieties and rootstocks.

HOPS

We work closely with NZ Hops and local Nelson growers to produce hop cuttings and crowns. Recent years has seen a large number of hop gardens being converted to new varieties as well as expansions of planted areas.  We have propagated over 100,000 hop cuttings each year for the past 2-3 years, under contract to NZ Hops and their growers.

Please note that we are only able to grow hops for growers licensed to NZ Hops.

FEIJOAS

Waimea Nurseries is committed to the development and long-term future of the feijoa industry in New Zealand.

One of our key areas of interest is in variety development. Together with our subsidiary Waimea Variety Management, each new variety is tested for its suitability to our growing conditions and all of the varieties we sell have been proven commercially.

In addition to our range of proven varieties, we are pleased to be able to offer three new early season varieties available exclusively through Waimea Nurseries: ‘Anatoki’, ‘Kaiteri’ and ‘Kakariki’. These varieties have been developed by Roy Hart, a well-respected, long-standing developer of feijoa cultivars.

Your choice of which feijoa variety to invest in depends on your location and growing conditions. We recommend that you plant three to four cultivars to cover the pollination issue and spread the harvest time and market options. Your choice will also depend on site location/region, fruit maturity, pollination and the fruit market (local, export or processing), along with climate, soils, shelter, planting times, harvesting and plant availability.

We highly recommend that feijoa growers, especially those new to the industry, join the New Zealand Feijoa Growers Association www.feijoa.org.nz.

OLIVES

Waimea Nurseries has been involved in the production of olive trees since the 1970s, during which time we have gained substantial experience in matching varieties to conditions to ensure maximum yield.

As the commercial olive industry gained momentum in the 1990’s, we began to import some of the world’s most successful varieties. We have continued this progression and believe we now offer the best selections to New Zealand’s olive growers.
